Numerology Collection Synagogue

Numerology looks at the symbolic significance of numbers found in religious texts. In this context, numbers are believed to hold deeper meanings and convey spiritual insights. The number you see here was produced from scrap pine and walnut wood, designed to require only small cuts to become recognizable with minimal waste.

The number one in Judaism signifies oneness and the inherent value of humanity. The Shema, a central Jewish prayer derived from the Torah, declares that “The LORD our God, the LORD is one”. This is further repeated in the first of the Ten Commandments. In Talmud Bavli, there is a statement that destroying one soul is equivalent to destroying the whole world, but saving one soul is as important as saving the whole world.

The number three in Judaism often represents wholeness. There are three Jewish patriarchs: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; Israel is a threefold nation made up of priests, Levites, and Israelites; and the Tanakh is a threefold book made up of the
Torah, Nevi’im, and Ketuvim. In each instance, there are three components that make up the complete set.

The number seven in Judaism is typically used to represent completeness. G-d completed the Earth on the seventh day, the seventh day of every week is a holy day of rest, and seven blessings called Sheva Brachot are spoken over the couple during their wedding. In each moment, something that has been in progress is being celebrated as complete.

The number ten in Judaism is often used to represent divine authority. Ten Commandments were given to Israel after their
exodus from Egypt, ten plagues were inflicted upon Egypt to free the Israelites from slavery, and Israel is commanded to give a tenth of their income to the community or the poor. It is a number that recognizes G-d’s authority over man.
